While watching a re-run of one of my favorite television shows "The Hills" I noticed a very interesting point made between a young couple in their early 20s, Heidi And Spencer. The couple is engaged however, they decided to take a mini break apart for their own space. During, their separation they have been constantly quarreling and arguing with one another over simple things. In the particular scene, Heidi was at a nightclub with her girlfriends and all of a sudden her ex-fiancee shows up. Instantly she gets upset that he's in the same venue as her and more upset at the fact he was surrounded by other women and being very flirtatious with the women as well. Heidi immediately creates a scene by storming out of the nightclub with Spencer following her. They then begin to argue and Heidi brings up a very interesting point about if it was her how would he react to her flirting with other men. She brings up the point that she would instantly be labelled as trashy or a whore with several guys surrounding her. This scence stood out to me simply because women are often labeled in situations such as this. They are always looked upon very differently. I think its very unfair for men to do such things and its "normal" or "alrite" but as soon a women does a act similar she automatically "trashy."
This specific episode also portrayed a gendered theme. Where both Heidi and Spencer were portrayed in a stereotypical that reflect conventional views of gender. With Spencer illustrating characteristics of a man flirting with pretty women. And of course Heidi getting very upset as his ex-fiancee.

Where do you think that they stereotypes of woman being "trashy" around a group of men came from? And, more interesting...the female character knew that this was the stereotype. Why didn't she just ignore it? And, another interesting idea that popped up in my mind when reading your post. It was a rerun that you were watching. You had a totally different take on it after taking this course, uh?
I certainly had a different take on it after taking this course, in fact, this course has taught me to look at so many things differently and I constantly look from the eyes of the course which is very interesting yet I LOVE IT!! I think many of these stereoptypes may have came from pre-50s where woman hardly played an essential role. I think its hard for women to ignore such stereotypes simply because similar incidents occur so often. She may have wanted to prove the stereotype wrong.
